Commentary

The unicorn, a fantasy creature that does not exist in real life, is shown as a symbol of different expectations and yearnings, such as gender freedom and purity in today’s world.

Hirano has been moving ahead with “Resurrecting Unicorn,” which started out as a work that creates all parts of the body, including its skeleton, internal organs, muscles, and skin, as an individual project since 2014.

It is an attempt at resurrection, to revive the lying unicorn by pumping air into its lungs and flowing fluid through its heart and blood vessels to simulate breathing and blood circulation. The invisibles, like dreams and hopes, that we tend to lose sight of in our actual lives might also be revived in the future through this work.
